Date: Sat, Mar 1 ‐ Sat, May 31, 2025

Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) is known as a painter who played a pivotal role in the Japanese art world from the Meiji to Showa Periods. He studied at the Tokyo Fine Art School, currently the Tokyo University of the Arts, and in 1898, participated in the establishment of the Japan Art Institute (Inten) under Okakura Tenshin’s reformation of the traditional Japanese painting style. At the Institute, he released numerous masterpieces for Inten. Taikan attempted to pursue a Japanese painting style appropriate for a new age and to develop new techniques, and made efforts to depict works that expressed his thoughts toward the nation. As a result, he greatly influenced the art world and wider Japanese society at the time.
This exhibition, celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Adachi Museum, will use all the exhibition rooms to display all of the Taikan works we house, which is the core of our collection. We will exhibit his master works from his earlier days to works depicting Mt. Fuji, for which Taikan is very well known, as well as his last work. We hope that you will enjoy tracing the history of Taikan, a great master of modern Japanese painting.
